Police in the Wamala Region have arrested 52 people in Kiboga District for allegedly participating in an unlawful political gathering held at night.

According to the Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, SSP Lameck Kigozi, the arrests were made at around 8:00pm at Nile Gardens in Kiboga Town Council following a tip-off from intelligence sources. The suspects were reportedly mobilised from several villages across Kiboga West Constituency.

SSP Kigozi said the meeting was allegedly organised by a man identified only as Jimmy, believed to be a mobiliser for independent parliamentary aspirant Kibuuka Muhamudu, who is contesting for the Kiboga West Member of Parliament seat. However, the suspected mobiliser reportedly fled before police arrived at the scene.

“Our officers received intelligence and moved swiftly to the venue, where they found 52 individuals gathered unlawfully,” SSP Kigozi said. “The suspects admitted that they had been mobilised by someone called Jimmy to attend a meeting for an aspiring MP.”

He added that by the time police stormed the venue, the parliamentary aspirant the group was expecting had not yet arrived. The arrested individuals reportedly told police that the candidate was scheduled to brief them on preparations for the upcoming general elections slated for 15 January 2026.

SSP Kigozi used the incident to caution politicians and their supporters across the Wamala Region against conducting political activities outside legally permitted hours or without proper authorization.

“We want to remind all political actors in Kiboga and the entire Wamala Region that any political activities must be conducted during daytime and in strict compliance with the law,” he emphasized.

He further warned that police will not hesitate to take action against individuals or groups that violate electoral guidelines, especially during the sensitive election period.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspected mobiliser who escaped, as investigations continue to establish the full purpose and circumstances of the nighttime gathering.
